Questions to Ask When Selecting a Closet Company

Selecting a company to plan and build a custom closet can be a little confusing, especially if you are new to home improvement projects or if this is your first one. There are a myriad of closet companies out there, but there are huge variances in the quality of their work, price and customer service. Today’s economy is extremely competitive. It is very important that you, as the client, have confidence going in that you are working with the right company. You want to work with one that can take your vision and make it a reality.

The first and most important phase of the project is an initial consultation. This is how you determine if the company is going to be able to provide the best design solution for your specific needs and whether or not you can realistically expect to do it within your budget. Most custom closet companies are happy to provide a free in-home consultation during which time you and the designer will examine the space, take measurements and discuss all your options.

You want to use the time spent with the consultant wisely and that means knowing what questions to ask. The more ground you cover, the better a gauge you will have of how one company’s quote compares to another. If you sense resistance from any company you contact to work with you or answer your questions, don’t make concessions or excuses for them. Move on and find one that wants to work with you.

First ask these questions listed on our ten questions page.  Then after you are happy with the answers here are a few more questions you should consider asking during the consultation:

1. How long has the company been in business?
A company’s longevity speaks of its reputation in the community and the quality of their work, but just because a company has been around longer doesn’t mean they will give you the best value or service. It is a good initial gauge, but it is far from most important.

2. How long has your designer been with the company?
The experience level of the designer is also a reasonable question. One should expect that if a company is sending a designer out on his or her own, he or she has enough experience to work independently and create a solution that will be pleasing to the customer. You will also want to inquire on how long the designer has been working in this particular field, especially if he or she has only been with their current employer a short time. Along those lines, is this person an employee or a sub-contractor?

Asking these questions, along with any others you might think of, will help you select your custom closet design company with confidence.
