Tips for Organizing Through the Holiday Season

Believe it or not, it is That Time of year once again. With the holidays so rapidly approaching some of us may find ourselves feeling a bit overwhelmed when it comes to planning and preparing. It is usually around this time of year that our knack for disorganization shows itself most prominently. It is also the reason why the holidays are often a very stressful time in our lives. On top of all our regular day-to-day responsibilities, plans for meals, decorating and shopping tend to overwhelm us.

The good news is that it doesn’t need to be that way. With a little structure and organization, we can all get through the holidays and enjoy a happy, stress-free time with friends and family. Here are a few ways to accomplish this goal.

Plan Ahead
As you unpack your decorations, begin organizing a strategy for how they will be stored later. At the end of the season, store them with other like items. This makes it much easier to find everything. Keep all your ornaments in one place. Keep holiday table settings and festive serving ware together. Storing plates and glasses inside things like tablecloths serves two purposes: everything is in the same place and fragile items are protected.

Write it Down
Another thing you will want to do is make lists. If you are hosting holiday meals, plan your menus well in advance. Inventory all your cooking ingredients and equipment. Make to-do lists for all facets of holiday planning. This includes shopping, travel preparations, etc.

Don’t Get Overwhelmed with Decorating
Know what you can get done and how long it will realistically take. Decorate well but don’t go overboard. Remember that whatever you put up will soon need to be taken down and after weeks of visiting and entertaining the task can seem daunting. You will also be less prone to maintain good organizational structure and opt for the easiest way to get things out of the way if every room in your home is cluttered with decorations.

Manage Your Time
Remember that the pace of the holiday season is extremely fast. You will need to have a daily organizational strategy in place to stay ahead of cleaning and organizing.

Focus on one room at a time and designate an amount of time to spend cleaning it. Keep a small box of cleaning supplies relevant to each room in a closet or inconspicuous corner of the room. A decorative basket is a great place to store a small duster or some furniture polish and a rag, even some glass cleaner or paper towels. Now your supplies are waiting for you room-to-room and you don’t have to make constant trips to your supply closet.

These are just a few of the ways you can make the holidays less stressful and still maintain good organizational habits. With a little planning and good time management there will still be plenty of opportunities to step back and enjoy the spirit of the season.
